Rules for writing the past simple and the past participle of regular verbs
1. In words with a short vowel sound and that end in a simple consonant, the consonant duplicates.
Example: stop --> stopped; plan --> planned
2. In words that end in a consonant + "y", the "y" changes to "i".
Example: carry --> carried; hurry --> hurried
3. The "l" duplicates in British English (but not in American English)
Example: travel --> travelled (British),
travel --> traveled (American)
Rules for the pronunciation of the past simple and the past participle of regular verbs
1. -ed is pronounced ⁄ Id ⁄ after the sounds ⁄ t ⁄ and
⁄ d ⁄
Examples: want --> wanted and mend --> mended
2. -ed is pronounced ⁄ d ⁄ after a vowel sound or voiced consonant such as y, ⁄ m, n, and more (see list)
Examples: rain -> rained, cover -> covered, seem -> seemed
3. -ed is pronounced ⁄ t ⁄ after an unvoiced consonant like ⁄ k, p, s, f, and more (see list)
Examples: look->looked, help->helped, cross->crossed
